- 3 large russet potatoes
- 2 medium yellow onions
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice potatoes thinly and set aside.
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt; cook until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
- Stir in garlic and thyme; cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half the potatoes, half the onion mixture, and half the cheese. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes; remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
