Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 whole whole chicken about 4-5 lbs

Beer

  • 1 can lager or pale ale opened

Spices

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for heat

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F to 400°F).
  • In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  • Rub the spice mixture all over the chicken, including under the skin for extra flavor.

Cooking

  • Open the can of beer and take a few sips to make space. Place the can inside the chicken cavity.
  • Stand the chicken upright on the grill using a beer can holder or directly on the grill grates.
  • Close the grill lid and cook for about 1.5 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh.
  • Remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 10 minutes before carving.

Notes

For added flavor, you can use flavored beers or add herbs to the beer can.
